Although it was unnecessary for the immigration application, with the application taking as long as it is, Nick needs to extend his work permit and for THAT we need a commissioner of oaths to sign a form for us.

Apart from not really knowing what a commissioner of oaths IS, I suspect I know a few folks who might be one.

Anyone?

I'm a commissioner of oaths. What kind of form are we talking about here? Do you need to swear an affidivat, or just need a notarial copy of some document prepared? Should be easy either way.

I need someone who is a commissioner of oaths to witness me and nick signing a paper swearing that we are in a long term, committed relationship.

I figure after this application is done, we may as well throw a party, we're doing all the marriage paperwork with none of the drunken partying. ;) You're invited :)

I find it strange that we only need a commissioner of oaths to extend his work permit, and not for the immigration application. If the immigration application wasn't processing much slower than we were told to expect, we wouldn't even have to do this. Odd how this system works.

Legal Aid can do it too.

awesome, thanks.

I'm really surprised we need to do this for a simple work permit extension, when we didn't need to for the immigration application itself.

If only the Immigration application processed within the expected time frame!

My brother and his wife were married here at city hall and then had a "church wedding" in germany so it would be legal in both places. It only takes half and hour, and from what my brother said, is quite cheap. You could prolly have a notary, jp, whatever do your oath, but why miss the opportunity to have a klingon wedding?!!! Really, it would be awesome!

While I can sign seemingly endless, more official feeling papers declaring my common law union, I can't actually marry Nick, as I'm still married.

It's weird, I always assumed the divorce/remarriage thing would be more paperwork. I think at this point they're about neck and neck.

There must be a lot of people who do this because of the ways the laws work but I've lost track of a friend so I'll ask. Is your brother a lawyer who did his articles in Ottawa?
